The History:
The name Don Mills was derived from The Don River, where several mills were founded in the 19th Century along the Don Valley. In fact, a wool mill sat where what is now known as Edward’s Gardens, and a saw mill was located on what is now Donalda Club. It’s interesting to think that the Don River’s flow was strong enough to propel the water wheels to operate these mills.
On May 8, 1953 the Don Mills Development was introduced and construction began on the first home on Jocelyn Crescent. Construction continued, quadrant by quadrant, and by 1997 the Ontario Heritage Foundation designated Don Mills as the first (and only) community honoured as a heritage site for the use of fundamentals and consistent planning principles. Don Mills is recognized as “Canada’s First Planned Community”.
Styles of Homes:
Ranch style bungalows are prevalent within Don Mills. You will also find semi detached (with good bargains and fair prices to be found southwest of the Shops). As you start to look through the neighbourhood you will see construction everywhere…with new town house neighbourhoods and improvements on existing homes. Some houses are being levelled in favour of larger “more prestigious” homes. There are a number of rental buildings and newer condos.
The Facts:
It is apparent that Don Mills has just begun it’s transition and at the heart of it all are The Shops. And still, Don Mills will provide you with the best of both worlds: The enjoyment of natural surroundings while affording you the proximity and accessibility to downtown.
The Conclusion:
It is evident that most of the residents wish to conserve the quaint appeal of the tree lined streets. Many in the community are advocates of maintaining the natural and ecological sustainability of their community. While still striving to meet the need for newer development, there is a call for efficient, appealing and profitable construction. We are encouraged to explore the many options for environmentally responsible real estate with exciting and cost effective materials and products now available on the market.
