THE HISTORY:
Formerly owned by the Church of England, land north of Danforth Avenue is known as Danforth Village. All the land south of Danforth was originally owned by families who were occupied on the farm or who worked in the brick making industry.
Asa Danforth, a citizen of the US, actaully built Kingston Road in 1799. He had nothing to do with the construction of Danforth Ave., however the street bares his name.
Although the Village boundaries run from Victoria Park west to Greenwood Avenue, we stumble into 2 very different neighbourhoods. As well, we discover 2 distinct BIA's (Business Improvement Areas).
Danforth Village BIA's boundaries run west along the Danforth from Victoria Park to Westlake Ave. While Danforth Mosaic continues from Westlake right over to Jones Ave, one of the City of Toronto's longest BIA's.
Style of Homes:
Home styles vary however, you will see a lot of semi detached homes with unique front porches. There has been significant growth and improvement in the existing housing stock right along the Danforth as the BIA's and the anchor stores are attracting newer, younger families. Smaller Bungalows rarely stay on the market very long.
The Neibourhood:
There is a large and diverse Muslim community that is united at Madina Majid, near Donlands. Significant fundraising is helping with the mosque's $4 million renovation which is expected to be completed Spring 2012.
The Drop in Centre for Toddlers (located at Kimbourne Ave) is a neighbourhood favourite. It's not uncommon to hear the kids sign "Frere Jacques" in 3 different languages. As well, every Tuesday and Thursday you can buy Local at Farmer's Markets located at East York Town Centre (Coxwell and Mortimer) and East Lynn Park (just west of Woodbine south side of Danforth).
The east end of the Danforth has the biggest draw...a 20 minute walk to the Beaches. Highlights at this end include Shopper's World, Leon's, Canadian Tire. As well, Ted Reeve Arena and YMCA offers incredible recreation programs.
The TTC has been modernizing Victoria Park Subway Station over the past 3 years. The entire project is due to be completed Spring 2011 and it is stunning!
